Kanamaluka/Tamar Infrastructure and Amenities Master Plan

The Kanamaluka/Tamar is a defining feature of northern Tasmania’s landscape, rich in cultural and natural significance. It plays a vital role in shaping the region’s identity, while offering important ecological values and recreational opportunities.

The Tasmanian Government launched the Tamar Estuary Management Taskforce (TEMT/the taskforce) Phase One: Implementation Plan 2023-2027 (Implementation Plan) in August 2023. The Implementation Plan is delivering on the TEMT 10-year vision for the Kanamaluka/Tamar estuary (PDF 1.3 MB) (the Vision) for the Kanamaluka/Tamar and includes more than $150 million in funding sourced from multiple partners, with the Tasmanian Government committing $50 million.

The Tasmanian Governments commitment to the Implementation Plan included over $200,000 to develop the Kanamaluka/ Tamar Infrastructure and Amenities Master Plan.

Extensive public consultation was undertaken in 2025 to identify key opportunities/actions that could be included in a Master Plan. The proposed actions/opportunities in the Master Plan focus on improving people’s experience of the water’s edge, creating recreational, cultural and economic opportunities, and improving connections across the city.

The development of the Kanamaluka/Tamar Infrastructure and Amenities Master Plan in 2025 was guided by a TEMT working group and steering committee with representation from local and state government, business and natural resource management. It was completed in late 2025 and launched by the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport in February 2026.
